Mount Mitchell, which is about 20 miles away from Asheville, NC, is a troublesome challenge from a communications standpoint. At 6,684 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Heavy snows can fall on the summit from December to March, and wind gusts up to 178 mph have been recorded.
Cellular and broadband services to the top of the mountain were not an option due to the elevation and harsh weather conditions.
VELOCITY DataBridge provided a reliable data connection via satellite services. The service utilizes miniature satellite antennas and an integrated IP modem and router to be able to remotely monitor and control the site.
The DataBridge solution has been reliable, despite the extreme weather conditions.
